Imbolc Rituals

…and the wheel turns…

Over the last few years I’ve felt more and more connected to Earth and her seasons, and enjoy celebrating the Sabbats on the Wheel of the Year.

Imbolc is all about the journey towards spring, as Earth prepares for new growth; shoots are pushing towards the surface, trees are preparing to blossom again, and hibernating animals are beginning to stir.

It’s also associated with the Celtic Fire Goddess Brigid, who can help you to feel inspired, creative, heal and find new beginnings.

Some ideas to celebrate Imbolc

(or why not create your own ritual? there are no ‘rules’ here)

Spring Clean and Declutter

Give your house a good clean (or maybe even decorate a room that needs a fresh look). Declutter anything that’s neither useful or beautiful. Try an emotional decluttering exercise as well : spring clean your soul.

Make Plans

This is a great time to think about what you’d like to be, do and have this year. What would you like to experience or learn about? What new hobbies or projects would you like to begin? How can you harness some creativity or find more inspiration? How can you (just like plants) do some growing beneath the surface, ready to re-emerge in Spring?!

Enjoy an Imbolc Ritual:

  • Set up an Imbolc altar. Mine contains: crystals, candles, a little statue of Gaia (Mother Earth), a corn doll representing Brigid and my manifesting box.

  • Meditate; connect to Earth, to Brigid, to your spirit guides or ancestors, or just do a calming, guided meditation. Whatever works for you.

  • Tune into yourself (your higher self, your heart, your soul, again - whatever works for you) and think about what you’d like to manifest this year. Write down your ‘wishlist’ for the universe and then either place it on a vision board, in a manifesting box or wherever you feel called; some people like to burn their list as a way of surrendering it to the universe.

  • Light lots of candles, to represent the return of the light and connect with Brigid.

  • Journal prompts:

    • What have I learned in the last six months? How have I grown?

    • What do I need right now, to achieve a fulfilling, happy year ahead?

    • What can I let go of, that’s no longer serving me?

Practice some Self Care

When did you last do something, just for you? A long bath, a spiritual ritual, a hobby or an early night? How can you weave this into not just Imbolc, but your life on a regular basis? Just like hibernating animals, with a little work on yourself, you can emerge in spring feeling refreshed and ready to take on the lighter months with energy and vigor.

Wishing you a blessed Imbolc.
