… make that a HUGE Boyzone fan.
Wow, it feels good to say that.
Now, I don’t know why, but I’ve always been kind of embarrassed about my taste in music. I actually have quite an eclectic taste, but my favourite is: boybands (wow, another relief moment). I have seen Take That, One Direction, Westlife, Backstreet Boys and countless others live… I know most of their lyrics… I love those (yes, sometimes cheesy) tunes, I love the melody, and, as I’m being so honest, I often have a crush on one or more of the band members.
So why am I kind of embarrassed by this fact? I guess my embarrassment stems from my school days. It wasn’t considered particularly cool to be a Boyzone/Take That/whoever fan when I was 14. That didn’t stop me from seeing Boyzone live 7 times … but it did mean I haven’t ever really shouted about how big a fan I am.
Even as an adult, I still listen to Boyzone quite often and am rather excited about their new album (the new single is brilliant!) but I still feel a bit embarrassed when people know I’m a fan. So, I’m coming out. I’m declaring it for all the World to know: I love Boyzone!
It started in 1994, when Love Me For a Reason entered the UK chart … (in 1999, age 18, I even went to Dublin mostly because I wanted to visit their homeland!) … it continued when they re-formed in 2008, and I cried when I heard the news about Stephen Gately dying in 2009 (in fact I still cry when I see the Gave It All Away video).
And in December, I’m going to see Boyzone live for the 8th time at Wembley Arena and I can’t wait.
So … there you go. I’m proud of my tastes, and you know what? At 32, I don’t care how ‘cool’ other people think boybands are. I love them, and that’s me, take it or leave it.

Update 2019: I’ve now seen Boyzone live 14 times, and met Ronan, Shane, Keith and Mikey 🙂
