Diamonds are NOT a girl’s best friend

Okay, so I like pretty things as much as the next woman. Although I don’t like a lot of clutter in my house, I do sometimes buy pretty things that are really just trivial ‘nothings’ that, let’s face it, are a bit of a waste of money.

What I don’t really understand is expensive jewellery.

Let’s take diamonds, for example. So rare, that you can find them in every jewellery store, in every city in the UK (and much of the world).

It has become traditional for a guy to buy a girl a big fancy diamond engagement ring that costs a month’s salary (WHAT?!) – but I think this is so un-romantic. It’s following the crowd, doing what everyone else is doing, instead of being unique. It’s spending a fortune on something material. Why not buy a cheaper ring, and use that money towards your wedding*, or better still; your honeymoon?! Or, even better still, buying a house or putting it to one side towards your future children’s upbringing? Now, that would be romantic.

Find man who wants to put that money towards the adventure of your lives – not spend it all on some rock that you’ll constantly worry about losing.

*Weddings are also something I do not understand all the fuss about. Firstly, it’s a piece of paper and you do not need it to prove your love. Second, if you really want to get married, why spend a year’s salary – or more! – on ONE DAY? The majority of that money will be spent feeding and “impressing” your loved ones… Impress them by saying no to convention and getting hitched at your local town hall. Again, why not spend the money on an amazing trip, a house, or your future children, instead?

These are my thoughts for the day. Happy weekend!
