Romantic mini-break in the Yorkshire Dales
My hubs turned 40 a few weeks ago. I had a vision of taking him for a European city break but of course, COVID ruined that. However: The UK is a beautiful country, and when it’s not raining it’s a pretty wonderful place to be. Lush green hills, water, sunsets, historical buildings: proof that you don’t need to travel abroad to have a fantastic time.

Accommodation
I had three requirements when finding somewhere to stay:
It had to have a dishwasher (I’d rather be having fun on holiday than standing at a sink washing dishes!)
It had to have a hot tub (I craved a little luxury as it was a milestone birthday!)
It had to be in a lovely area, with some nice views and places to go walking
After scouring through many options, I came upon Poppy Cottage No. 1, which is in a little village called Carleton, near Skipton. What a gem! It was spacious yet cosy. Nice little garden. All the equipment you could need. And a lovely hot tub to soak in after a day out and about in the Dales. I wanted my hubs to relax (he’s always busy with work and this year has been crazy) and this cottage was the perfect place to do that. Highly recommended. You can check out the cottage here >
Food
We stayed three nights; I prepped a lasagne to warm up on the first night, then we did a vegan BBQ the second evening. The last day, we ate at a lovely pub just a few minutes walk from our cottage called The Swan Inn. There’s something nice about walking out to dinner when you’re away.
My overall impression
The Yorkshire Dales are just beautiful. Rolling green hills, quaint villages, historical buildings, gorgeous views. It was much quieter / less touristy than the Lake District, and we were both really rather taken with the whole area. A return visit (with our dogs and for a longer period) is definitely on the cards.
What a beautiful country we live in.
